UPDATE: A repeat child sex offender, Jose Castro-Vega, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple counts of sexual assault involving children. This urgent development comes as the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office confirms that Castro-Vega targeted at least 11 victims, many of whom were under the age of 13.

In a shocking revelation, the 60-year-old Pleasantville resident was sentenced on October 30, 2023, by Superior Court Judge Donna Taylor, who mandated that he “must serve every day” of his sentence. Prosecutors reported that Castro-Vega had evaded New Jersey’s Megan’s Law registration for decades following a previous conviction in 1992 for sexually assaulting a minor.

Authorities launched a Special Victims Unit investigation on October 27, 2023, after receiving reports of Castro-Vega’s ongoing sexual abuse of minors. Investigators uncovered alarming accusations, including claims that he drugged some victims with pills to facilitate sexual acts. This investigation quickly expanded, revealing a history of abuse that dates back to at least 2021.

The investigation led to Castro-Vega’s arrest just one day later, where he was charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault, and fourth-degree criminal sexual contact. Prosecutors reported that he admitted to assaulting seven victims and having inappropriate contact with four others.

With the total number of known victims reaching 11, the authorities are determined to ensure that Castro-Vega is held accountable. If released after serving his sentence, he will be required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law and will be subject to lifetime parole supervision.

This case highlights the urgent need for vigilance and effective monitoring of sex offenders, especially those with a history of evasion. Victims and their families are now left grappling with the profound impact of Castro-Vega’s crimes.

As this story develops, the community remains on high alert, and officials emphasize the importance of reporting any suspicions related to child safety. Stay tuned for more updates on this significant case as it unfolds.
