BREAKING: UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev is set to defend his title just once before moving up to pursue a second championship in the light heavyweight division. In an exclusive interview with ESPN, Chimaev shared his ambitious plans that have MMA fans buzzing.

Chimaev, who boasts an undefeated record of 15-0, captured the middleweight title in a dominant performance against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 319 in August. The Chechen fighter aims to schedule his title defense after the Muslim holiday of Ramadan in March 2024.

“I need to do my job,” Chimaev stated, expressing his anticipation for a lucrative matchup. “If there is a big name to make more money, then I will be excited.” He emphasized the financial aspect of fights, suggesting that a potential purse of $6 million could be a significant motivator over a less lucrative bout.

Currently, the top contender in the middleweight division is Nassourdine Imavov, but Chimaev has expressed reluctance to fight him due to their friendly relationship, stating, “I would actually prefer not to fight him.” However, he remains open to the idea if it aligns with the UFC’s interests.

Another possible opponent is the winner of the upcoming clash between former champion Sean Strickland and Anthony “Fluffy” Hernandez in February. Chimaev’s ultimate goal, however, is to challenge Alex Pereira, the reigning light heavyweight champion and a popular figure in the sport.

Chimaev remarked, “That’s a good fight for me. Everyone knows that. The UFC knows that.” He criticized Pereira’s reluctance to face him directly, reinforcing his determination to secure this high-stakes matchup.

The MMA community is eagerly watching as Chimaev prepares for his title defense, which is anticipated to bring significant excitement and financial rewards. Fans are left to wonder who will step into the octagon against Chimaev next and how this journey could reshape the middleweight and light heavyweight landscapes in the UFC.

Stay tuned for more updates as Chimaev’s plans unfold and the fight landscape evolves leading into March 2024.
