Civil Rights Leader Bill Patterson Passes Away at 94
UPDATE: Civil rights leader and former East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) Director William “Bill” Patterson has passed away at the age of 94 on May 19, 2025. Known as the “Conscience of the District,” Patterson dedicated over 27 years to championing equity for EBMUD’s 1.4 million customers.
Patterson made significant contributions to public health, particularly in addressing lead contamination in schools, and advocating for environmental sustainability in the Mokelumne watershed. His longtime commitment to community service and equity has left an indelible mark on the East Bay region.
EBMUD Board President Marguerite Young expressed deep sorrow over Patterson’s death, stating, “Bill Patterson was a devoted public servant whose exemplary leadership and thoughtful voice strengthened our board.” She highlighted his “passion for people” and collaborative spirit, emphasizing the profound impact he had on the community.
Patterson was elected to the EBMUD Board in 1997, representing Ward 6 in Oakland until his retirement in 2024. Beyond his role at EBMUD, he served as a three-term president of the Oakland NAACP, focusing on inclusion and investment for the Black community in the East Bay.
Current EBMUD Director for Ward 6, Valerie Lewis, reflected on his legacy: “Bill’s legacy is woven into the fabric of EBMUD and the East Bay. He was a mentor and a fierce advocate for the people he served.” His influence extended beyond politics, inspiring countless individuals to lead with heart and purpose.
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee recognized Patterson as a “positive force in the lives of generations of Oakland youth,” crediting him for his mentorship of sports legends and civic leaders. “When I was sworn in as Oakland’s Mayor, it was Bill who held my grandfather’s Bible,” she recalled. “Even amidst challenges, he never stopped making this city better for all of us.”
Patterson’s passing marks a significant loss not only for the EBMUD community but for the entire Bay Area. As tributes pour in, his legacy of dedication to civil rights and community development will continue to resonate.
The community is encouraged to honor Patterson’s memory by continuing his work towards equity and sustainability. As details emerge regarding memorial services, residents are urged to stay updated on ways to pay tribute to this remarkable leader.
