Boulder High’s Haunted House “Shipwreck of Souls” Opens This Weekend
UPDATE: Boulder High School’s highly anticipated haunted house, “Shipwreck of Souls,” opens this weekend, promising spine-tingling thrills for Halloween enthusiasts. Starting at 7 PM on Saturday, October 28, 2023, visitors can expect immersive terror, complete with gory sea creatures and an eerie sunken ship atmosphere.
This year’s theme invites guests to explore a 1920s sunken cruise ship, where every room is filled with chilling surprises and haunting visuals. The event runs from 7 PM to 10 PM on Saturday and from 6 PM to 9 PM on Thursday and Halloween night, October 31, 2023.
Students have poured their creativity and passion into this ambitious production, as highlighted by co-director Mads Cass, a junior at Boulder High. “You can tell that a lot of work and a lot of love was put into it,” Cass stated. With approximately 40 students involved, the haunted house offers a unique blend of acting and technical skills, all under the guidance of technical director Paul Mealey.
Mealey emphasized the importance of fun alongside fear, reminding his team, “The goal is just to make smiles happen — and some screams.” Each year, students select a new theme to ensure that returning guests have a fresh experience. Co-director Scarlett Caste shared her inspiration, revealing, “I’m terrified of fish,” which sets the stage for this year’s eerie nautical adventure.
Visitors will traverse rooms adorned with barnacles, tentacles, and seaweed, while sound effects of crashing waves enhance the immersive experience. The design team has even created a tilted floor effect to induce a “seasick” sensation for those daring enough to walk through.
Makeup head Odalis Torres confirmed the commitment to gruesome details: “There’s blood in everything. Nothing in the haunted house has not been touched by blood.” Guests can expect a range of reactions, from screams to nervous laughter, as they encounter actors dressed as terrifying sea creatures.
The haunted ship’s speakeasy features Darin Williams, who previously played a bloody rabbit and is now serving drinks. “You can tell they’re still scared,” Williams observed, noting the diversity of guest reactions.
Tickets for “Shipwreck of Souls” can be purchased at tinyurl.com/3ktx638r or at the door, with proceeds supporting Boulder High’s theater department. Don’t miss out on this chilling adventure that promises to deliver unforgettable frights and fun for all ages.
