Dodgers Shift Lineup Ahead of Crucial Game 5, Ohtani Ready
UPDATE: The Los Angeles Dodgers are making significant lineup changes just hours before Game 5 of the 2025 World Series, as manager Dave Roberts seeks to rejuvenate a sluggish offense. The Dodgers, tied 2-2 in the series against the Toronto Blue Jays, are desperate for a win at home, making this an urgent moment for the team and its fans.
In a bold move, Will Smith has been shifted to the No. 2 batting spot, while Mookie Betts will hit third for the first time in four years. Alex Call replaces the struggling Andy Pages at the bottom of the lineup. Roberts is hopeful that these adjustments will create more opportunities for Shohei Ohtani, who has faced challenges at the plate during the playoffs.
Roberts stated, “In the postseason, you’ve got to be a little more reactive than in the regular season. When I netted out the value of what I feel gives us the best chance to win today, that was a decision I made.” The Dodgers have struggled offensively, posting a mere .220 batting average since the wild-card round, compared to their regular season average of 5.1 runs per game. They have also faltered in critical situations, going just 6-for-29 with runners in scoring position.
With the series tied and the Dodgers needing at least one win in Toronto to defend their title, Ohtani may also be available out of the bullpen in upcoming games. He expressed his willingness to help, stating he wants to stay ready for Game 6 or 7 if called upon. While Roberts has yet to discuss this possibility with Ohtani, he remains open to the idea: “If he can go, if it makes sense, certainly he would be an option.”
The players are feeling the pressure. “I think it’s just human nature,” said Freddie Freeman, one of the Dodgers’ top performers in the series. He emphasized the need to focus on building innings and working counts, rather than chasing pitches. “We all want to hit home runs in the biggest of stages. It’s on us to stop that pattern and get back to being who we are.”
As the Dodgers prepare to take the field, the stakes couldn’t be higher. This Game 5 is not just a pivotal moment; it’s a chance to regain momentum and showcase their championship caliber. The urgency is palpable as fans await to see if the lineup changes will ignite the Dodgers’ offense and keep their title hopes alive.
Stay tuned for live updates and analysis as this critical game unfolds.
