UPDATE: The CU Buffs are in crisis mode as they prepare to face Arizona on Saturday at 5 p.m. (FS1), following an abysmal performance against Utah where they surrendered a staggering 422 rushing yards in a devastating 53-7 loss.

Defensive ends coach George Helow expressed his shock after the game, stating, “It was embarrassing, something I’ve never been a part of before.” As the Buffs (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) look to bounce back, improving their run defense has become an urgent priority.

Currently ranked 134th out of 136 FBS teams in rush defense, CU is allowing an alarming 217.25 yards per game. Over the last two outings, they’ve given up a staggering 658 rushing yards, averaging 329 per game. Helow acknowledges that the team needs to own their failures and learn from them.

“We’ve got to move past it, bury it, make the corrections,” Helow stated during practice. “We’ve had really good talks as a defensive staff about what we need to do moving forward.”

As they gear up for the Wildcats (4-3, 1-3), the Buffs are aiming to avoid a repeat of their previous performance. Arizona, while not as formidable as Utah, still presents challenges, particularly with running back Ismail Madhi, who boasts 445 yards on 77 carries, averaging 5.8 yards per carry.

“We can’t let him bounce out to the second level and get on the edge,” Helow warned. “We’ve got to secure the edges and make him run north and south.”

Helow’s concerns extend to the quarterback position as well. Although Arizona’s Noah Fifita isn’t known for his rushing ability, he still has the potential to make plays with his legs. “It’s collectively as a unit,” Helow emphasized regarding the need for teamwork to contain the opposition.

Defensive end Keaten Wade reflected on the tough film session following the Utah game, stating, “It was definitely hard to watch. But I feel we’ll be better this week, bringing a different type of energy in practice.”

Helow took personal responsibility for the defensive failures, asserting, “It’s all on me. I’m the run game coordinator. I have a job to do, and I didn’t get it done.”

With fans and the sports community watching closely, the CU Buffs are under pressure to show significant improvement against Arizona. A loss could further jeopardize their season, making this game a critical turning point for the team.

As kickoff approaches, all eyes will be on whether the Buffs can rise to the occasion and correct their mistakes on the field. Stay tuned for updates as we cover this developing story.
