UPDATE: A tow truck driver has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a line worker in Selma, North Carolina. Ronald Mayo, age 44, was taken into custody early Friday morning following the deadly incident that occurred on Wednesday evening.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers charged Mayo with felony hit and run involving a death. The incident unfolded around 5:20 p.m. on October 18, 2023, when the victim, identified as 29-year-old James P. Rudzki from Wendell, was repairing low-hanging power lines along Live Oak Church Road near Carmil Drive.

Witnesses report that Mayo was driving a flatbed tow truck hauling a sewer cleaner truck when he disregarded a stop signal and crashed through the scene. This reckless action caused Rudzki to fall from the pole he was working on, leading to his tragic death.

After the collision, Mayo fled the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward without incident. He is scheduled to face a judge at the Johnston County courthouse later today.
