Depew Police File Protection Order After Student’s Threat
URGENT UPDATE: Depew Police have filed a Temporary Extreme Risk Protection Order against a student following a serious social media threat. The threat, deemed not credible by authorities, has raised significant concerns among families in Depew, New York, as schools address safety protocols in response to the alarming incident.
On October 5, 2023, Depew school officials notified families about a troubling post made by a student linked to Depew High School. Superintendent Katie Smith emphasized, “Any type of threat, even one that does not specifically name the district or its schools, is taken seriously.”
The threat surfaced after a violent altercation among students was captured on video and circulated online. In a concerning turn of events, the police application indicated that the student involved in the social media post had previously participated in a “targeted assault of a juvenile student victim” at Depew High School.
The disturbing video, showing the student issuing threats against those who commented on the post, has left parents and students shaken. Local resident Rachel Bohn, whose daughter was attacked during the incident, voiced her concerns, stating, “It’s tough. She’s looking over her shoulder constantly now because an assault like that, that doesn’t just walk away from your brain, that stays.”
According to New York Courts, an Extreme Risk Protection Order is issued when an individual may pose a danger to themselves or others. This order prevents the individual from purchasing or possessing firearms and mandates the surrender of any weapons they may already own. The implications of such a measure are significant for community safety.
Inquiries regarding disciplinary actions for the students involved in the altercation have been directed to law enforcement. Superintendent Smith confirmed, “The District was advised by the Depew Police Department that they have taken action. We continue to work with local law enforcement as the District is committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all of our students.”
As this situation develops, families in Depew are urged to remain vigilant and report any concerning behavior. Authorities are committed to ensuring the safety of all students and the community at large.
