Trump Signals GOP Retreat Ahead of Crucial Elections

UPDATE: New reports indicate that President Donald Trump is distancing himself from the GOP ahead of the critical elections in Virginia and New Jersey. Insiders suggest he believes Republicans may already be facing defeat, according to a Washington Post article published on October 14, 2023.

This shift in strategy comes as Trump has noticeably refrained from investing the usual millions into these races, signaling a stark contrast to previous election cycles. In Virginia, his silence speaks volumes, with former GOP state delegate Chris Saxman stating, “I don’t think he likes to back candidates he knows are going to lose.”

Trump’s limited support has been highlighted by his endorsement of only Attorney General Jason Miyares, while he has avoided officially backing gubernatorial nominee Winsome Earle-Sears. When asked about Earle-Sears, Trump offered only a lukewarm endorsement, describing her as “very good” and asserting she “should win because the Democrat candidate’s a disaster.”

Republican strategists are divided over Trump’s involvement. One operative in the New Jersey governor’s race noted that if Trump campaigned in the state, “Jack’s turnout Tuesday would be insane,” referring to Republican Jack Ciattarelli who is challenging Democratic congresswoman Mikie Sherrill. However, former chief of staff to Trump’s vice president, Marc Short, warned that the political landscape is primarily in Democratic strongholds, suggesting it may benefit candidates to distance themselves from Trump.

Polling data reveals a concerning trend. According to John McLaughlin, a longtime Trump pollster, “There’s a lot more incentive to come out because you’re upset about having lost the previous year.” He bluntly stated, “The Trump voters, right now, are complacent.”

Democrats are capitalizing on this sentiment. Nearly half of the Democratic gubernatorial ads in Virginia and 69 percent of attorney general race ads explicitly mention Trump. One ad directly claims, “Sears backs Trump policies that are raising prices for everything,” illustrating the Democratic strategy to tie Trump to local economic issues.

In California, Trump has proactively sought to undermine the credibility of upcoming election results, stating on social media, “Watch how totally dishonest the California Prop Vote is!” This echoes his ongoing narrative regarding electoral fraud.

As the elections approach, Trump appears to be carefully managing his political capital, opting for a strategy of minimal direct involvement. The landscape ahead is increasingly uncertain for the GOP, with less than a week until critical elections.

WHAT’S NEXT: With the elections set for October 17, 2023, all eyes will be on the voter turnout and the implications of Trump’s strategic retreat. Will Republicans rally in time, or will Trump’s detachment seal their fate? Stay tuned for live updates on this developing story.
