Gary Man Charged with Rape After Brutal Attack on Woman
UPDATE: A 43-year-old man from Gary has been charged with multiple felonies, including two counts of rape, following a brutal attack on his girlfriend in a senior apartment bathroom. Corey Jones was arrested on November 3, 2023, after the victim reported the horrifying incident to police.
The woman, who was visibly emotionally distressed, told officers that Jones attacked her after she refused to perform a sex act for $10 with an older man present. The incident occurred at the Al Thomas Senior High Rise located on the 100 block of W. 11th Avenue. Police have confirmed that Jones is currently in custody, held on a $12,000 cash bond, and is scheduled to appear in court on November 12 before Judge Gina Jones.
According to police reports, the couple left a hotel in Merrillville earlier that day to run errands. After selling a pair of shoes, they visited a fast-food restaurant and a liquor store. The victim indicated that Jones had been verbally abusive throughout the day, accusing her of infidelity and threatening her life.
In a shocking twist, when they arrived at the senior apartments, an older man propositioned Jones for the woman, stating, “I know she’s a white girl, so I’ll have sex with her anyway.” After the woman refused the $10 offer, Jones violently forced her into the bathroom, threatening to kill her if she did not comply.
The victim reported that Jones choked her until she lost consciousness, at which point he raped her. Upon regaining consciousness, she found him still assaulting her. After the attack, Jones allegedly took her underwear to eliminate any traces of his DNA.
In a desperate bid for escape, the woman threw a can at Jones and managed to leave the apartment. She walked south on Broadway Avenue and used a passerby’s cellphone to call the police. The victim disclosed to officers that Jones had a history of physical abuse but she had not reported previous incidents due to fear for her safety.
Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about this case or similar incidents to come forward. The community is rallying for justice as the case continues to develop, highlighting the urgent need for support for victims of domestic violence.
