Oklahoma Photographer Jakian Parks Unveils ‘The Black Land’ Exhibit
UPDATE: Oklahoma photographer Jakian Parks has just unveiled a powerful new exhibit titled ‘The Black Land: Rituals and Rejoicing’ at the Oklahoma Contemporary. This exhibit, which reflects the rich heritage and pride of Black cowboys and rodeo culture in Oklahoma, opened today, October 15, 2023, and is already creating a buzz among art enthusiasts and community members.
Parks, dressed in his signature black Stetson and roper heels, reminisced about his journey from a young boy yearning to ride at rodeos to becoming a celebrated photographer. “This is like a homecoming for me,” he stated, surrounded by images that encapsulate the spirit of black rodeos and the deep-rooted connection to land and community.
Alongside creative partner Chloe Flowers, Parks has meticulously curated photographs taken in significant locations, including a ranch in Jones, OK, a church in Arcadia, OK, and the annual Boley, OK Rodeo. “These images reveal a historic part of our state’s long Black history and showcase the modern Oklahoma Black cowboy,” emphasized Trent Riley, Executive Director of Oklahoma Contemporary.
The exhibit showcases not only the artistry behind the lens but also the stories behind each image, highlighting the themes of self-determination and community pride. “I really think about what he first told me about the project,” Flowers explained, underscoring the emotional depth of the exhibit.
Parks’ work is more than just photography; it’s a celebration of culture, resilience, and the unique experiences of Black cowboys in Oklahoma. The exhibit has become a focal point for discussions surrounding identity and heritage, inviting visitors to engage with a narrative that is often overlooked.
As the exhibit opens, the community is encouraged to explore these powerful images and the stories they tell. For those interested in the intersection of art and cultural identity, ‘The Black Land’ promises to be an enlightening experience that resonates deeply with the audience.
