UPDATE: As the federal government shutdown continues to cut off vital SNAP benefits for thousands of families, metro restaurants in Oklahoma City are urgently stepping in to provide free meals to those affected. This initiative comes as families struggle to feed their children, making community support more critical than ever.

Restaurants such as Taquitos Feliz, located at NW 23rd Street and MacArthur Blvd., are experiencing an influx of customers who are now relying on these free meals. Owner Roberto Brambila reported that over 100 people have sought assistance this week alone. “I like to help them out whenever I can,” Brambila stated, highlighting the human need behind this initiative.

Since the start of the month, SNAP benefits have been halted due to the government shutdown, leaving many parents without the resources they need to put food on the table. In response, Taquitos Feliz offers a complete meal for anyone who presents an EBT card along with at least one child. Customers can choose from tacos, burritos, or quesadillas—completely free of charge.

Brambila acknowledges the financial strain of this program but emphasizes its importance. “It’s a hit I’m willing to take. I love helping people out,” he shared. The restaurant’s commitment to community support has resonated with patrons. Regular customer Gil Torres was moved to contribute back after witnessing Brambila’s generosity. After a quick visit to the ATM, Torres returned to the restaurant with cash to pay it forward, demonstrating the power of community during these challenging times.

In addition to Taquitos Feliz, other local establishments like Taco Casa are also offering free meals to children who present an EBT card. Furthermore, Oliver’s Pizzeria is set to give away free large one-topping pizzas on Monday between 2 PM and 6 PM to anyone who shows a valid SNAP or EBT card.

These acts of kindness serve as a reminder that even amid political turmoil, community support remains strong. “This isn’t a time to be political. It’s a time to be human,” Torres said, emphasizing the importance of helping one another.

As families continue to navigate the challenges posed by the SNAP shutdown, these local restaurants are proving that compassion and humanity can shine through adversity. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these offers and support local businesses making a difference.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as more restaurants join the effort to assist families during this critical time.
