Broomfield DA Announces New Family Justice Center for Victims
UPDATE: The Colorado 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has just announced a groundbreaking initiative to open a new family justice center in 2024, aimed at providing crucial support to victims of domestic violence. District Attorney Brian Mason revealed the urgent need for this center during a media update, emphasizing the pervasive threat of domestic violence in communities nationwide.
The family justice center will be located at the Adams County Human Services Center at 11860 N. Pecos St. in Westminster. Here, victims will have access to a comprehensive range of services — including legal assistance, housing, counseling, and crisis support — all under one roof. Mason highlighted that the most perilous time for victims often occurs when they attempt to leave their abusers, a period marked by heightened risks of violence.
Currently, victims face numerous barriers in seeking help, often needing to navigate multiple offices across different cities. Mason stated, “The need to serve victims of domestic violence exists now — it existed yesterday, it existed five years ago.” This center aims to eliminate those barriers, providing a streamlined path to safety and support.
Mason has been proactive in addressing domestic violence since taking office in 2021. His office has established a special victims unit dedicated to domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking cases. Furthermore, a domestic violence high-risk team has been created to identify vulnerable victims and swiftly connect them with necessary resources.
The urgency of this initiative cannot be overstated. Mason remarked, “Domestic violence impacts everyone. It doesn’t matter what language you speak, it doesn’t matter what political party you are a part of. It impacts every single (type of) person.” This sentiment underscores the widespread nature of the issue, which affects individuals and families across all demographics.
As the family justice center prepares to open its temporary location next year, Mason and his team are actively seeking a permanent space to ensure long-term support for victims. With this new center, officials hope to foster a safer environment for victims and their families, significantly reducing the barriers they currently face.
The announcement of the family justice center is a pivotal step forward in the fight against domestic violence, reflecting a commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals. As preparations progress, the community is urged to stay informed and supportive of this vital initiative.
This story will continue to develop as more details emerge regarding the opening timeline and operational specifics of the family justice center. Stay tuned for updates on this critical community resource.
