UPDATE: A fire broke out at an apartment building in Waterville on Friday evening, but quick action from firefighters and an effective sprinkler system prevented a potential disaster. Emergency crews responded to the scene at 6 Water St. at approximately 6:30 p.m., where they discovered alarms ringing and residents evacuating.

Firefighters from both Waterville and Winslow arrived to find smoke filling a stairwell and water cascading between floors. The fire, located in a fifth-floor construction area, was primarily contained by the building’s sprinkler system, which significantly minimized damage.

As a result of the incident, residents have been temporarily relocated due to water damage and non-functional fire protection systems. Currently, only the third floor of the Lockwood Mill apartment renovation remains occupied. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

The Waterville Housing Authority swiftly provided transportation and temporary lodging for displaced residents at a nearby hotel. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and authorities are urging building owners and residents to ensure that fire alarms and sprinkler systems are properly maintained.

Residents are reminded of the critical importance of fire safety measures, especially in multi-story buildings. As investigations continue, the Waterville Fire Department emphasizes vigilance and preparedness to prevent future incidents.
