Oakland Mourns Coach John Beam After Shocking Murder
UPDATE: Oakland is in mourning following the tragic murder of beloved football coach John Beam, who was shot in the head at Laney College on October 26, 2023. The shocking incident has left a community grappling with grief and disbelief as details emerge about the 27-year-old suspect, who reportedly believed Beam used “witchcraft” against him.
Witnesses describe a somber scene at Laney College, where a makeshift memorial of candles, posters, and heartfelt notes has formed in Beam’s honor. The coach, known for his dedication to young athletes, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, succumbed to his injuries just one day after the attack. The violence has sent ripples of fear through the campus, prompting a significant increase in security personnel.
John Beam, aged 66, had a profound impact on the lives of countless players during his four-decade coaching career, first at Skyline High School and more recently at Laney College. Many of his former players went on to achieve success in the NFL. “He was more than a coach,” said Frank Williams, a Hollywood showrunner and Oakland native. “He was like a surrogate father, especially for a lot of young men and women who didn’t have a parent in the home.”
The tragic circumstances of Beam’s death have drawn attention not just to his legacy but also to the ongoing struggle against violence in Oakland. Just two months ago, crime statistics indicated a decline in violence in the area, but this horrific event starkly contrasts with that optimistic outlook.
Beam gained national recognition in 2020 when he was featured in the Netflix documentary series Last Chance U, which showcased the challenges faced by Laney’s football team, comprised largely of young men from disadvantaged backgrounds. The series highlighted their resilience and Beam’s unique coaching style, which combined tough love with genuine compassion.
In a community now reeling from grief, the presence of a beefed-up security force on campus underscores the urgent need for safety. Local leaders and former players have expressed their sorrow and determination to honor Beam’s legacy by continuing to uplift the youth of Oakland.
Former colleague Romeo Garcia urged the community to channel their grief into action. “John continued to do good in Oakland, no matter what,” Garcia stated. “What I would ask people to do is to continue to do that good. You can’t give up on the city when it needs you the most.”
As the investigation into Beam’s murder unfolds, the Laney College community is left to grapple with the profound loss of a coach who was a beacon of hope and support. In these dark times, the urgent call for community unity resonates louder than ever.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the murder, with many in the community watching closely for updates. Beam’s legacy as a coach, mentor, and father figure will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
