Leanne Ford Transforms 20th-Century Cottage into a Cozy Retreat
Leanne Ford, a prominent interior designer known for her distinctive white-on-white aesthetic, has infused a historic 20th-century cottage in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, with warmth and character. After relocating from Los Angeles in 2020, she and her husband, Erik Allen Ford, sought a slower pace of life and a connection to family. Their journey began with the purchase of a cottage built in the early 1900s, which they discovered after three months of searching for the perfect home.
Ford’s design philosophy emphasizes a lived-in feel, which she has showcased through various collaborations with retailers such as Crate & Barrel and Loloi. In her upcoming book titled The Slow Down, she expresses her commitment to preserving the integrity of the cottage while modernizing it for contemporary family life.
Revitalizing a Neglected Space
The sunroom of the cottage stands out, adorned with dusty earth tones that beautifully capture the natural light streaming in through expansive glass windows. Originally a neglected breakfast room separated from the kitchen by a wall, the space felt disconnected from the rest of the home. Recognizing its potential, the Fords undertook a month-long renovation that included removing the wall and a fireplace, the latter repurposed by Ford in another project nearby.
From the moment Ford stepped onto the terra-cotta floors of the sunroom, she felt an immediate connection. Although she typically refrains from declaring favorites among her design projects, this room resonated with her vision.
As the third owners of this historic property, the Fords aimed to honor its original details while adapting it for a family of the 21st century. They focused on small yet impactful changes that breathe new life into the 1,200-square-foot space, highlighting their respect for the home’s history.
Leanne Ford’s journey in Sewickley reflects not only her artistic vision but also a desire to create a sanctuary for her family. The transformation of the sunroom exemplifies her ability to blend old-world charm with modern sensibilities, ensuring that the cottage remains a cherished home for years to come.
