Ocasio-Cortez and New York Democrats Endorse Hochul for Reelection
Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has joined fellow New York Democratic leaders in endorsing Governor Kathy Hochul for reelection. This decision, announced on February 6, 2026, marks a significant shift for Ocasio-Cortez, who did not make a primary endorsement during the previous election cycle in 2022.
Alongside Ocasio-Cortez, the endorsement was supported by New York’s other 18 congressional Democrats, as reported by Politico. Governor Hochul, who positions herself as a moderate within the Democratic Party, has faced criticism from various factions, including those further to the left.
Political Dynamics Among New York Democrats
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani previously endorsed Hochul, articulating a collaborative approach to governance. In an article for The Nation, Mamdani wrote, “Together, we have fought to protect New Yorkers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).” He emphasized the need to defend both the party and the democratic principles that support working families.
Despite their alliance, Mamdani acknowledged differences with Hochul, particularly regarding taxation policies aimed at addressing income inequality. He stated, “The governor and I do not agree on everything,” indicating a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue rather than divisive conflict. This approach contrasts sharply with earlier tensions seen within the party during the Biden administration.
The endorsement appears to align with strategic political calculations as Hochul looks to solidify her base ahead of the election. Jasmine Gripper, co-director of the New York Working Families Party, noted that Hochul’s administration has taken steps to address the affordability crisis, which resonates with many voters in New York.
Endorsements and Political Alliances
Initially, Hochul hesitated to endorse Mamdani for mayor, expressing concerns over his “tax-the-rich” rhetoric. In June 2025, she remarked, “I’m focused on affordability and raising taxes on anyone does not accomplish that.” However, by September 2025, she ultimately supported his candidacy, showcasing her willingness to reconcile with progressive elements within the party.
Mamdani’s subsequent reluctance to commit to endorsing Hochul for reelection illustrates the complexities of Democratic politics in New York. He indicated that his focus would remain on the upcoming municipal election, highlighting the intricate balance between collaboration and individual political aspirations.
As Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani forge these alliances, they may risk alienating some segments of their base. However, the decision to work together may ultimately prove to be a more effective strategy than engaging in open conflict, allowing them to navigate the challenges of a diverse political landscape.
The evolving dynamics among New York Democrats reflect a broader trend of seeking unity while managing ideological differences. As the election approaches, the effectiveness of these alliances will be closely watched by both supporters and critics alike.
