Oregon State Welcomes JaMarcus Shephard as New Head Coach

Oregon State University introduced JaMarcus Shephard as its 33rd head football coach, marking a pivotal moment for a program at a crossroads. Shephard’s appointment comes after a tumultuous period that saw the dismissal of his predecessor, Trent Bray, following just 19 games. The Beavers are set to navigate a challenging landscape in the revamped Pac-12, which will include six new football schools beginning July 1, 2026.

During the press conference, Shephard expressed his desire for change and opportunity, drawing from his upbringing in Indiana. He emphasized his ambition, stating, “I just knew I wanted something different. I wanted something special with my life.” His enthusiasm resonated throughout his 18-minute address, as he outlined a vision for the future of Oregon State football.

Shephard joins the Beavers after spending the previous seasons at Alabama, where he honed his coaching skills. This downturn led to Bray’s departure and a prolonged search for a new leader, ultimately culminating in Shephard’s hiring.

As the Pac-12 landscape evolves, the competition is intensifying. New entrants, including schools from the Mountain West, have entered the conference, raising the stakes for Oregon State. Programs like San Diego State and Fresno State are making strides under experienced leadership, while Boise State continues to enjoy success under coach Spencer Danielson.

Power conference schools typically invest at least $13 million into their rosters annually, while the Pac-12 average may be lower, estimated between $5 million to $7 million. He has selected Mitch Dahlen as his offensive coordinator, who shares a background with Shephard from their time at Alabama.
