ABC’s Matt Gutman Joins CBS News Amid Major Anchor Changes
Matt Gutman, a prominent journalist with a long tenure at ABC, is set to join CBS News following the announcements of anchor departures by both Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson. This transition marks a significant shift within the network as it navigates changes in its leadership.
The news of Gutman’s move was first reported by the Los Angeles Times on December 6, 2025. While it is not officially confirmed whether Gutman will replace either DuBois or Dickerson on the CBS Evening News, speculation suggests he is a leading candidate for the role. DuBois and Dickerson are both set to exit the network this month.
DuBois announced his departure on December 4, 2025, via an emotional post on Instagram, while Dickerson revealed his exit on October 27, 2025, also through social media. Dickerson has been with CBS for 16 years and has made significant contributions to the network during his tenure. Although there were initial rumors about him taking over the CBS Evening News, reports indicate he will join CBS as a correspondent instead.
Gutman’s career at ABC began in 2008, where he became a familiar face on various programs, including ABC World News Tonight, Good Morning America, Nightline, and 20/20. His extensive experience and journalistic skills have made him a respected figure in the industry.
This move to CBS represents Gutman’s first major role under the leadership of Bari Weiss, who assumed the position of editor-in-chief at CBS News in October 2025. Weiss’s appointment is seen as a pivotal moment for the network as it looks to redefine its news offerings.
The exits of DuBois and Dickerson create a significant gap in CBS’s news lineup. Should Gutman not take on the anchor role for CBS Evening News, the network will need to find suitable replacements for both departing anchors. This situation underscores a period of transition for CBS News as it adapts to new leadership and evolving viewer expectations.
As CBS prepares to address these changes, the network has yet to confirm the future direction of its flagship evening news program. With Gutman’s arrival, CBS aims to bring fresh energy to its news coverage amid these ongoing adjustments.
