Expert Offers Guidance on Maintaining Health During Holidays
As the holiday season approaches, many individuals find that their healthy habits become increasingly difficult to maintain. According to **Samantha Harden**, an associate professor at **Virginia Tech**, the chaos of travel, family gatherings, and busy schedules can lead to unhealthy routines. However, she emphasizes that achieving wellness during this period does not necessitate perfection.
Harden points out that expectations often contribute to this struggle. “We expect to have time off and be our ‘best selves’ when we step back from work and have all the space to create healthy routines,” she stated in a recent news release. This mindset, she argues, sets many people up for failure as they overlook the time consumed by various holiday activities—both enjoyable and obligatory.
Instead of waiting for an ideal moment to renew healthy practices, Harden suggests integrating these choices into everyday holiday activities. For example, simple adjustments to meals during family gatherings or incorporating short bursts of physical activity can make a significant difference without feeling overwhelming.
Broader Perspective on Well-being
Harden encourages individuals to redefine their understanding of health beyond just exercise and nutrition. She identifies six essential areas of well-being: happiness, mental and physical health, close social relationships, meaning and purpose, character and virtue, and material and financial stability.
“Maybe during the holiday season, you’re putting less time or other resources into your physical well-being, but you’re putting more into your perception of close social relationships,” Harden explained. This shift in focus can allow individuals to appreciate the connections they foster during the holidays, contributing positively to their overall well-being.
Harden also advises against adopting an all-or-nothing approach to health. “During the holidays and always, don’t think of one meal, day, or season away from healthy habits as failure,” she said. This perspective is crucial, as it helps individuals navigate the complexities of holiday living without feeling discouraged by temporary setbacks.
For those seeking further guidance, **Harvard Health** provides a range of tips for maintaining healthy eating habits throughout the holiday season. Adapting to these recommendations can help individuals enjoy their holiday celebrations while still prioritizing their health.
In summary, while the holiday season can present challenges to maintaining healthy routines, focusing on balance and flexibility can lead to a more enjoyable experience. Emphasizing relationships and redefining health can help individuals navigate this busy time with greater ease.
