A high school culture fair in the Wissahickon School District, Pennsylvania, has sparked significant controversy after Jewish parents accused a Muslim student club of promoting pro-Palestinian activism during the event. The Muslim Students of America (MSA) chapter was among the groups showcasing at the fair, but according to parents, the display went beyond cultural representation. “My child came home shaken and unsure of whether it’s even safe to speak up as a Jew at school,” said parent Lynn Simon. Eyewitness accounts describe a range of activities, including the distribution of keffiyahs, a cultural garment that has become a political symbol, and the promotion of slogans like “Jerusalem is ours.”

Photos shared on social media depicted Superintendent Dr. Mwenyewe Dawan and Assistant Superintendent Sean Gardiner visiting the booths, with Principal Dr. Lynne Blair later sharing images before removing some due to backlash. Parents expressed concern over the nature of the slogans presented and the overall atmosphere of the fair. Critics have labelled the school’s approach to the event as inappropriate, suggesting the administration was complicit in a political display rather than fostering an educational environment.

Criticism intensified when Simon stated, “When the principal is posting pictures of students wearing slogans like ‘Jerusalem is ours,’ that’s not education — it’s indoctrination. We don’t send our kids to school to be marginalized.” The sentiment was echoed by Steve Rosenberg, Philadelphia director for the North American Values Institute, who described the incident as “educational malpractice” and called for a clear distinction between cultural education and political advocacy.

A letter signed by dozens of Jewish parents, which was obtained by Fox News Digital, outlined several incidents they believe crossed educational and ethical boundaries. The parents specifically pointed to the use of financial incentives, such as cash-prize contests, to encourage participation in what they viewed as politically charged activities. They argued that this approach was coercive and inappropriate for a school setting.

During a board meeting on December 1, 2023, the president of the MSA defended the usage of the phrase “Jerusalem is ours,” stating, “Jerusalem is currently a conflict zone in which two parties are actually fighting over it.” The student further explained that the slogan was written in Arabic, suggesting that Jewish students unable to read it might not identify it as antisemitic.

As the situation continues to unfold, parents are urging the school district to take decisive actions. Their letter calls for transparency regarding the distribution of keffiyahs, an explanation of the principal’s social media posts, and a release of the event’s planning framework. They also seek the establishment of guidelines to prevent cultural programming from evolving into political advocacy and have requested a listening session for Jewish families to voice their concerns directly.

“Schools must be safe, neutral spaces where students of all identities are respected,” the letter concludes. “What happened this week undermines that principle and has caused real fear among Jewish students who now wonder whether their district will protect them — or leave them to navigate this climate alone.”

The incident at Wissahickon High School highlights the delicate balance educational institutions must maintain between cultural celebration and political expression, raising questions about the role of schools in fostering inclusive environments.
