Southwest Louisiana is embracing the spirit of giving this holiday season with the launch of the Red Kettle Campaign, which aims to raise $250,000 for local residents in need. This effort, managed by the Salvation Army, invites community members to donate while shopping at various local stores and Walmarts, where bell ringers will be stationed with red kettles throughout the season.

The Red Kettle Campaign has a rich history dating back to 1891. It began when Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee sought to provide a Christmas dinner for the impoverished in San Francisco. Lacking funds, he was inspired by a donation kettle he had seen in Liverpool and placed a pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing with a sign that read, “Keep the Pot Boiling.” This initiative quickly gained traction, leading to the distribution of 150,000 Christmas dinners by 1897 and large meals held in New York’s Madison Square Garden by 1901.

Today, the campaign supports millions across the United States and has expanded its reach globally, providing critical aid in countries like Korea, Japan, and across Europe. In Southwest Louisiana, the Salvation Army serves five parishes: Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jeff Davis. The organization meets various community needs, including shelter, meals, disaster response, and spiritual care.

According to Major Michael Knott, commanding officer of the Salvation Army, the local organization provides essential services, including a hot meal every evening, available to both shelter residents and community members. Running a shelter incurs significant costs, averaging about $30,000 per month. The funds from the Red Kettle Campaign are vital, covering utilities, rent assistance, and operational costs.

Last year, the campaign raised $180,000, and with just over three weeks remaining in the current season, nearly $100,000 has already been raised. Major Knott highlighted that 95 percent of the funds collected are reinvested back into the parishes served.

Community members can contribute in various ways. Donations can be made in person via cash or check, or online through the Salvation Army’s website and Facebook page. The campaign is also featuring a “$25,000 in 25 days” challenge, encouraging individuals to participate actively.

While the holiday season often sees an influx of donations, the Salvation Army emphasizes that volunteer opportunities are available year-round. Major Knott noted, “There’s always something going on here at the Salvation Army.” Volunteers play a crucial role in sustaining operations, and the organization encourages those interested to sign up as bell ringers at www.registertoring.com. This platform allows volunteers to select their preferred locations, including DeRidder, Oakdale, Jennings, Lake Charles, Moss Bluff, and Sulphur, and to commit to shifts in five-hour increments, often shared among friends or family.

As the Red Kettle Campaign continues, the Salvation Army remains committed to addressing the needs of the community and fostering a spirit of generosity through local support.
