Sydney Sweeney Addresses Controversy Surrounding Jeans Campaign
The American actress Sydney Sweeney has publicly addressed the backlash surrounding her involvement in a denim campaign for American Eagle. The campaign, launched in July 2025, sparked significant discussion due to its slogan, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.” Critics raised concerns over the racial implications of the wordplay linking “jeans” and “genes.”
While American Eagle issued a response to the criticism, Sweeney remained silent until recently. In an interview with GQ in November, she expressed surprise at the public reaction, stating, “I did a jean ad. I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”
In a more recent statement during an interview with People, Sweeney elaborated on her feelings regarding the controversy. “I was honestly surprised by the reaction,” she said. “I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren’t true.”
She emphasized her commitment to unity, noting, “Anyone who knows me knows that I’m always trying to bring people together. I’m against hate and divisiveness.” Sweeney acknowledged her previous decision to remain silent on the issue, suggesting that it may have contributed to further division.
“I hope this new year brings more focus on what connects us instead of what divides us,” she added, highlighting her desire for a more positive dialogue. As the conversation around her campaign continues, Sweeney’s remarks reflect her intention to clarify her position and promote inclusivity.
The American Eagle campaign, which has generated extensive media coverage, illustrates the power of celebrity endorsements and the sensitivity required in addressing cultural issues. The actress’s response may serve as a reminder of the impact that public figures have in shaping conversations around societal values.
