Carol Obando-Derstine, a Democratic candidate for Congress in the Lehigh Valley, has garnered significant support from a group of prominent Latina politicians. On October 12, 2023, she received endorsements from U.S. Representatives Nanette Barragan, Linda Sanchez, Andrea Salinas, and Veronica Escobar. This backing adds weight to her campaign as she aims to become the first Latina representative for Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District.

Obando-Derstine, a former engineer and regional affairs director for PPL Corporation, announced her candidacy in May, with the support of former Representative Susan Wild. In a recent news release, the endorsing representatives emphasized her dedication to community service and her professional accomplishments in the energy sector.

According to Veronica Escobar, a U.S. Representative from Texas, “Carol Obando-Derstine represents the best of our Latina leadership: hardworking, compassionate, and deeply rooted in her community.” She highlighted Obando-Derstine’s commitment to advocating for families who often feel overlooked and expressed confidence in her ability to bring that determination to Congress.

Before her tenure at PPL, Obando-Derstine served as a regional manager for Bob Casey, a Democratic U.S. Senator, and held leadership positions in various local nonprofit organizations, including SkillsUSA Council and the Children’s Coalition of the Lehigh Valley. Her diverse background equips her with a unique perspective on the needs of her community.

As the only woman and Latina in the race for Congress in the Lehigh Valley, Obando-Derstine stands out in a district where approximately 20% of the population identifies as Latino. This demographic significance could play a crucial role in the upcoming election, particularly as the district is viewed as one of the most competitive in the United States.

The primary election landscape sees Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, the current Republican incumbent, running unopposed for a second term. Obando-Derstine faces strong competition within her party, with other Democratic challengers including Lamont G. McClure, the Northampton County Executive; former federal prosecutor Ryan Crosswell; former Bethlehem firefighter Bob Brooks; and Mark Pinsley, Lehigh County Controller.

As the campaign progresses, Obando-Derstine’s endorsements from influential Latina leaders may enhance her visibility and appeal among voters, particularly in a district that values representation. The outcome of the primary election will be pivotal in determining the Democratic candidate who will challenge the incumbent Republican in the general election.

With the support of established political figures and her commitment to address community concerns, Carol Obando-Derstine is positioning herself as a formidable candidate in Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, aiming to bring a fresh perspective to Congress.
