Clark Lea Selected as Finalist for Prestigious Coaching Award
Vanderbilt University’s head football coach, Clark Lea, has been named a finalist for the prestigious 2025 Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award. The announcement, made on Wednesday by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and the Peach Bowl, places Lea in contention alongside notable coaches including Curt Cignetti of Indiana University, Ryan Day of Ohio State University, Joey McGuire of Texas Tech University, and Kirby Smart of the University of Georgia.
The Bobby Dodd Trophy honors a coach who achieves success on the field while exemplifying leadership, scholarship, and integrity off the field. The finalists are chosen by previous award winners, national media representatives, a member of the Dodd family, and a College Football Hall of Fame member. The winner will be revealed in the week leading up to the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal, which will occur during the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
Lea’s nomination follows his recognition earlier this week as the recipient of the 2025 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. Under his leadership, the Vanderbilt football program has undergone a remarkable transformation, improving from a challenging 2-10 record to an impressive 10-2 within a two-year span. This turnaround has been significantly aided by Lea’s strategic use of the transfer portal and effective offseason recruiting.
Key players, such as star quarterback Diego Pavia, have contributed to this success. Lea’s vision for the program emphasizes toughness, determination, and an underdog mentality, which he has consistently instilled in his team since taking the head coaching position in December 2020. Over the past two seasons, Lea has guided his team to a combined record of 17-8, marking a significant achievement in the history of Vanderbilt football.
The current season has seen Vanderbilt achieve the highest number of wins ever recorded in a single season, with 10 victories. As the team prepares for its upcoming challenges, including a matchup against UAlbany, the excitement around the program continues to build. The women’s basketball team, currently ranked No. 13, will also be looking to maintain an unbeaten record, aiming for an 11-0 start for the first time since the 1995-1996 season.
With the spotlight on Lea and the Vanderbilt football program, the upcoming weeks promise to be pivotal for the team’s aspirations and recognition in collegiate athletics.
