Falcons Face Quarterback Dilemma as Kirk Cousins Reflects on Future
The future of quarterback Kirk Cousins has become a prominent topic of discussion as the Atlanta Falcons navigate their options heading into the offseason. During a recent press conference in Flowery Branch, Georgia, Cousins reflected on his journey, likening his current situation to a pivotal moment in his high school career. He recalled being questioned about his performance and its implications for potential college scholarships. “You go out with your buddies, you play the best you can, you enjoy it, focus on the present, and you let the chips fall where they may,” he stated.
At 37 years old, Cousins is under contract with the Falcons for two more seasons, but he perceives this year as one on an “expiring contract.” Raheem Morris, the Falcons’ head coach, acknowledged that discussions regarding Cousins’ future will take place after the season. “Everything is on the table,” he said, indicating that the team is still considering its options.
Cousins’ situation is complicated by a hefty projected cap hit of $57.5 million in 2026 and 2027, which would account for approximately 18 to 19 percent of the projected salary cap. Last offseason, Cousins requested a trade after being benched in favor of Michael Penix Jr. late in the 2024 season. Despite these challenges, he expressed his commitment to playing well in the present. “It’s more about, this is a privilege to be out here, this is an opportunity, and I have a responsibility to do the best I can,” Cousins remarked.
Cousins stepped in as the starting quarterback due to an injury to Penix, who suffered a knee injury on November 16 against the Carolina Panthers. This injury raises questions about Penix’s readiness for the upcoming season, especially considering his history of injuries. Although Morris has labeled Penix as the “quarterback of the future,” he has also indicated the necessity of cautious management regarding the player’s health.
The Falcons currently face a challenging landscape at the quarterback position. Cousins showcased his abilities with a 373-yard game against Tampa Bay, contributing three touchdowns. Although he ranks 33rd in the league in expected points added (EPA) per dropback, his performance has improved, moving to 15th over the past three weeks. He remains focused on his responsibilities: “Do I feel comfortable out there? Yes. Do I feel like I’m enjoying playing with the guys I’m playing with? Yes,” he said.
Morris defended his decision to bench Cousins last year, noting that it was a difficult choice made at a critical time. “I never thought he wasn’t a valuable starting quarterback,” Morris stated. Despite previous struggles, the coach praised Cousins for regaining confidence and performing effectively in recent games.
Looking ahead, the Falcons will need to address Cousins’ contract and the overall direction of the quarterback position. They signed Cousins to a record-setting $180 million deal in 2024, but now face significant salary cap implications. They could opt for a post-June 1 cut this offseason, which would limit the dead cap penalty to $35 million spread over the next two years.
As the season progresses, Cousins remains pragmatic about his uncertain future. “I’ve played a lot of years on expiring contracts,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the present. With the offseason looming, the Falcons must evaluate their options carefully while considering both Cousins’ performance and Penix’s recovery. The decisions made in the coming months will significantly impact the team’s trajectory moving forward.
