Joe Rogan and Fans Confused by Pantoja’s Injury Update
The unexpected injury suffered by Alexandre Pantoja during UFC 323 has left both fans and commentators baffled. Just 20 seconds into his fight against Joshua Van, Pantoja appeared to sustain a serious injury that many believed involved his elbow. However, a post-fight update revealed the injury was to his shoulder, leading to confusion among viewers and experts alike.
During the event, viewers were subjected to repeated replays of the incident, making it seem clear that something had gone wrong with Pantoja’s arm. Commentator and podcast host Joe Rogan expressed his concern, fearing the worst for the flyweight champion. After the fight, Megan Olivi provided an update from UFC’s Chief Medical Physician, Dr. Jeff Davidson, stating that Pantoja had suffered a left shoulder dislocation with spontaneous reduction. This medical term indicates that the shoulder dislocated but subsequently returned to its socket on its own.
Despite the official diagnosis, Rogan and many others remained puzzled. In a discussion with his colleagues, he questioned whether Olivi had mistakenly referred to the shoulder instead of the elbow, as the visual evidence seemed to support an elbow injury. Olivi clarified that she was relaying the information directly from Dr. Davidson, reiterating that the injury was indeed to Pantoja’s shoulder.
Pantoja is scheduled to undergo further examinations in Florida to assess the extent of the damage to his arm and to determine if any additional injuries were sustained. Although he left the arena with his family while wearing a sling, he is reportedly resting comfortably.
The confusion surrounding the injury was also echoed by Brian Sutterer MD, a sports medicine specialist, who expressed disbelief on social media. He stated, “We all clearly saw the elbow go out on the replay. Has to be a translation issue or something because he absolutely hurt his elbow.”
Rogan’s reaction highlighted the broader concerns among fans and analysts about the clarity of injury reporting in combat sports. As Pantoja navigates his recovery, the implications for the flyweight division remain uncertain. His title was lost in this brief encounter, just 26 seconds into the match against Van, raising discussions about whether such incidents should result in a no-contest decision.
The situation continues to develop, and fans eagerly await further updates on Pantoja’s health and future in the UFC. As the sport evolves, clarity in communication regarding injuries will be crucial for maintaining trust among athletes and their supporters.
