Lakers’ Winning Streak Ends with 125-108 Loss to Suns
The Los Angeles Lakers’ impressive seven-game winning streak came to a halt on March 25, 2024, following a decisive 125-108 loss to the Phoenix Suns. Luka Doncic took responsibility for the defeat, highlighting his nine turnovers as a pivotal factor in the game. “That was my fault,” Doncic stated. “No way I can have nine turnovers in a game.”
Doncic started strong, scoring 20 points in the first quarter, marking the third time in four games he reached that threshold in the opening frame. The teams were tied at 31-31 before the Suns took control, outscoring the Lakers 35-21 in the second quarter.
Turnover Troubles and Defensive Challenges
Throughout the second quarter, Doncic struggled, committing four turnovers while teammate Austin Reaves added four of his five turnovers. The Suns capitalized on these mistakes, turning them into scoring opportunities. “I feel like it definitely was a different defense than other teams play,” Doncic reflected. “They were trying to let me go score instead of creating for others. It was kind of confusing, but like I said, just can’t have it.”
The nine turnovers tied a career high for the eight-year veteran and accounted for a significant portion of the Lakers’ problems. Every turnover resulted in a steal for the Suns, marking the highest number of live-ball turnovers by any player in a game this season, according to ESPN Research.
Lakers coach JJ Redick noted the impact of Suns center Mark Williams on Doncic’s performance. “In terms of the scheme, they never went to any sort of blitz or shock,” Redick explained. “Mark Williams did a great job of just being big. He’s got the second-highest standing reach in the NBA, and their guards did a good job of being physical.”
Despite the challenges, Doncic finished the game with 38 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists. Reaves contributed 16 points, while LeBron James recorded 10 points, 3 assists, and 3 turnovers. James extended his NBA record streak to 1,297 consecutive games scoring double digits with a three-pointer in the fourth quarter.
Looking Ahead: Tough Road Trip for the Lakers
After the game, James emphasized the importance of limiting turnovers against a disruptive defense. “Turnovers, transition points,” he said when discussing the loss. “On our home floor and against a team like that, you can’t turn the ball over that much.”
The Suns, led by Dillon Brooks with 33 points and Collin Gillespie with 28 points, dominated fast-break points, outscoring the Lakers 28-2 in that category.
As the season reaches its quarter pole, the Lakers hold a 15-5 record but face a challenging schedule ahead. Their next four opponents all have winning records, including three games in four nights against teams in Toronto, Boston, and Philadelphia.
Redick acknowledged the need for improvement. “You got to look at everything,” he stated. “Rotations, schemes, all that stuff.” The Lakers will need to address these issues quickly to regain their momentum as they head into a demanding stretch of games.
