Former MLB slugger Trey Mancini is making another attempt at a major league comeback after signing a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels. This agreement includes an invitation to the team’s big league spring training in Tempe, Arizona. The Angels announced on Wednesday that Mancini is among their 27 non-roster invitees.

Mancini, now 33 years old, boasts a career batting average of .263, along with 129 home runs and 400 runs batted in (RBI) over seven seasons in Major League Baseball. However, he has not played in the majors since March 2023. His career began with the Baltimore Orioles, where he played for six seasons and achieved a personal best of 29 home runs in 2019.

His journey took a significant turn in 2020 when he missed the entire season due to surgery for a malignant tumor in his colon. Following successful treatment, Mancini returned to the Orioles in 2021 and was subsequently traded to the Houston Astros, with whom he won a World Series ring in 2022. He briefly played for the Chicago Cubs during the 2023 season and later joined the minor league systems of the Cincinnati Reds, Miami Marlins, and Arizona Diamondbacks.

During his time with the Diamondbacks, Mancini opted out of a minor league deal in July 2023 after a strong performance, batting .308 with 16 home runs while playing for Triple-A Reno. His signing with the Angels marks a pivotal moment in his ongoing efforts to return to the major leagues.

As Mancini prepares for spring training, he aims to leverage his experience and resilience to secure a spot on the Angels’ roster, hoping to return to the field at the highest level of competition.
