Winter Sports Season Kicks Off with Standout Teams and Athletes
The winter sports season has commenced, showcasing remarkable performances across various high school teams in Colorado’s Front Range. Each week, standout athletes and teams will be recognized for their achievements, highlighting the competitive spirit of this dynamic season.
Impressive Team Performances
Broomfield High School’s girls basketball team opened their season with an impressive *2-0* record, defeating both Rock Canyon and Denver East by significant margins. Sophomore sensation Reece Gilpatrick has been a key player, averaging an outstanding *20 points* per game while shooting at *65%* accuracy.
The Broomfield girls swimming team also made waves, winning the *12-team Legacy Invite* at Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center. Junior Kamryn Wimmer excelled, clinching victories in the *100-yard breaststroke* and *50 freestyle*, contributing to the Eagles’ success in the *400 free relay*. Additionally, senior Myra Wherry recorded the fastest time in *4A* for the *100 freestyle* at *55.22* seconds, while the team achieved the best mark in the *200 free relay* at *1:46.06*.
At Centaurus High School, the boys basketball team started strong, boasting a *3-0* record. Senior Nick Jones has led the team with an average of *12.7 points* per game, shooting an impressive *71%* while also contributing *7.3 rebounds*.
The Dawson girls’ basketball team secured their first win under new coach Mike Blakely, overcoming Rocky Mountain Lutheran with a fourth-quarter surge, outscoring their opponents *13-3*.
Fairview High School has shown strength across both boys and girls basketball. The girls team, with a record of *2-0*, has dominated their matches, allowing only *37 total points* across two games. Senior Chloe Hickory has been a standout, scoring a total of *28 points*. The boys team also began their season positively with a *57-52* win against Prairie View, thanks to a solid performance from junior Trevor Ochs, who scored *23 points*.
Frederick High School’s girls basketball team is off to a remarkable start, winning all four of their opening matches. Despite losing four key players from last season, they have adapted well, defeating teams including Loveland and Eaton.
The Lyons girls basketball team has also made headlines, achieving a *2-0* record while limiting their opponents to an average of just *21.5 points* per game. Meanwhile, the Niwot Cougars, under new coach Laura Loomis, have begun their season with two victories.
Prospect Ridge Academy’s boys basketball team demonstrated their dominance by opening the season with a *2-0* record, including a formidable win against Jefferson, where they outrebounded their opponents *53-16*. Junior Jack Brandt has emerged as a key player, averaging *23.5 points* per game.
Longmont High School’s Silver Creek boys basketball team is also performing well, starting the season with a *4-0* record, highlighted by a *30-point* win over Berthoud, where senior Luke Schmeeckle recorded *24 points*, five rebounds, and five steals.
Individual Highlights
Several athletes have made notable contributions in their respective sports. Veronika Hafer from Holy Family secured the title in the *110-pound weight class* at the Greeley West Tournament, showcasing her wrestling prowess.
In swimming, junior Arabella Marcus leads the *4A* rankings in the *200 IM* with a time of *2:19.49*. Another standout, Eve Nordgren from Legacy, claimed victories in both the *100-yard freestyle* and *100 backstroke* at the Legacy Invite.
In wrestling, senior Peyton Pacheco from Fairview won the *215-pound weight class* at the *Mike Stanley Invitational*, securing a technical fall against Overland’s Romeo Molina.
From Niwot, Genevieve Saunders achieved the top diving score in *4A*, posting a remarkable *256.50* in her recent competition, while also excelling in gymnastics.
Other notable individual performances include senior Caleb Schott from Holy Family, who scored *22 points* in a commanding victory over Colorado Academy, and freshman Maeve Simon from Longmont, who currently holds the top time in the *500 freestyle* at *5:35.86*.
As the winter sports season unfolds, the achievements of these athletes and teams not only highlight their dedication and skill but also foster a sense of community and pride within the schools they represent. Coaches and players alike are eager to continue showcasing their talents in the weeks ahead.
