URGENT UPDATE: A 9-year-old boy in Jena, Louisiana is recovering in a burn unit after a terrifying incident involving a tablet charger that left him with serious injuries. Ashtyn Pitts was asleep when his necklace became entangled with the charger, causing it to spark and ignite.

The shocking event unfolded early on the morning of July 15, 2023, as Ashtyn’s mother, Lauren Morrow, was jolted awake by her son’s desperate screams for help. “It was like this loud bang, and then I woke up, and I started shaking, and I was screaming help,” Ashtyn recalled. His quick-thinking brother joined him in calling for assistance.

Ashtyn suffered burns on his neck and hand and was immediately taken to the emergency room. He was later transported to a burn unit in Shreveport, where he continues to receive treatment. “I lost it, I started crying… we could be planning a funeral right now,” Morrow expressed, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

This alarming incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of charging devices carelessly. Numerous studies reveal that many children sleep with their phones or tablets charging under pillows or within their bedding, significantly increasing the risk of fires.

The National Fire Protection Association has issued critical safety recommendations: Avoid charging devices under pillows, on beds, or in areas exposed to direct sunlight. Always use the charger specifically designed for your device.

As communities rally around Ashtyn and his family during this challenging time, this incident raises urgent awareness about the potential hazards of electronic devices, especially among children. Parents are urged to take immediate action to ensure the safety of their children by adhering to safety guidelines.
