CHP Urges Drivers to Stay Safe as 82 Million Travel for Holidays
UPDATE: With the holiday travel season officially underway, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is urging drivers to prioritize safety as nearly 82 million Americans are projected to travel over Thanksgiving. This surge in travel, combined with hazardous weather conditions, poses significant risks on the roads.
As of Midnight Saturday, the National Weather Service Hanford has issued a Dense Fog Advisory due to visibility dropping to as low as 200 feet. CHP Officer Anthony Daulton emphasizes the critical need for drivers to turn on their low beam headlights in foggy conditions, warning that high beams can worsen visibility.
The CHP’s holiday enforcement period begins Thanksgiving Eve and continues through Sunday, underscoring the urgency for travelers to ensure their vehicles are road-ready. “Make sure your vehicle is in good standing. Check your tires and prepare for any potential issues,” says Officer Daulton.
Local mechanics are sounding the alarm about the importance of routine vehicle maintenance. Brandy Ames, a Technician Manager at Sunnyside Auto Repair, advises drivers to visit a trusted auto shop every 5,000 miles to prevent serious issues. “Waiting too long for maintenance can turn your holiday travel into a nightmare,” she warns.
Ames highlights that checking essential components like engine health, brakes, and fluid levels—including coolant and oil—can prevent catastrophic failures. “Low fluids can lead to overheating, which could result in major repairs or even total vehicle loss,” she explains.
In the event of emergencies, the CHP is just a phone call away. Officer Daulton reassures travelers, “If you’re on the highway and you dial 9-1-1, it will connect you directly to CHP dispatch.”
As millions take to the roads, the CHP and local mechanics urge everyone to drive safely and avoid rushing. “Say a prayer, hit the road, drive safe, don’t rush,” emphasizes Ames.
With the roads expected to be congested and weather conditions challenging, drivers are encouraged to stay informed and prepared. For live updates on road conditions and safety tips, follow Christina Lopez on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
Stay safe and enjoy your holiday travels!
