Cooper Flagg Sparks Mavericks’ First Win with Stunning Performance
UPDATE: The Dallas Mavericks have secured their first win of the season, defeating the Toronto Raptors 139-129 on Sunday night, thanks to a thrilling performance by rookie sensation Cooper Flagg. The 2025 No. 1 draft pick electrified the crowd at the American Airlines Center with a spectacular and-1 slam dunk that marked a pivotal moment in the game.
Flagg’s stunning dunk over Toronto’s Sandro Mamukelashvili ignited the Mavericks’ offense, lifting them from an early-season slump that had seen them start 0-2. The victory was a much-needed boost, with Flagg finishing the game with 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. “Tonight was really the first time we gave [the fans] something to be excited for,” Flagg said post-game.
The Mavericks showcased a balanced offensive attack, with seven players scoring in double figures. Power forward Anthony Davis led the charge with 25 points, while guard D’Angelo Russell contributed 24 points and a team-high 6 assists. Russell thrived as a sixth man after missing the second half of the previous game due to a coach’s decision.
Flagg’s performance has placed him in the NBA history books. At just 18 years and 309 days old, he is now the fifth-youngest player in league history to score at least 20 points in a game, joining legends like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. Furthermore, Flagg is now one of only two players to achieve this milestone without committing a turnover before turning 19.
During a critical 26-9 run in the third quarter, Flagg contributed significantly, scoring seven points and providing three assists. His highlight dunk energized the crowd and his teammates, prompting celebrations on the bench. “When he’s getting the crowd going like that, our team feeds off it,” Russell noted, emphasizing how Flagg’s performance was contagious.
Dallas, which had been struggling offensively, found a new rhythm, scoring 25 fast-break points and dominating the paint with 70 points in the lane. The Mavericks also excelled from the charity stripe, going 29-of-39 from the free-throw line. This turnaround is critical as superstar guard Kyrie Irving continues his recovery from a torn ACL.
“It feels great. I’m excited,” Flagg expressed. “We want to build off tonight, use it as a baseline. This team needs to just keep building and getting better.”
As the Mavericks look to build momentum after this victory, fans are eager to see if Flagg and his teammates can maintain this level of performance in their upcoming games. The energy in the American Airlines Center was palpable, and with Flagg at the helm, the Mavericks may have turned a corner in their season.
