Crown Point Unveils Riverfront District, Opens Door for More Liquor Licenses
UPDATE: Crown Point has officially launched its new riverfront district, paving the way for increased liquor licenses aimed at enhancing the city’s dining scene. This pivotal decision was unanimously adopted by the Crown Point City Council during its meeting on November 3, 2023.
Mayor Pete Land emphasized the initiative’s goal of attracting fine dining establishments as he addressed community questions. “We’re not building a river,” Land clarified, stressing that the district focuses on restaurants rather than bars. This change is designed to elevate the city’s appeal and bolster tourism in the downtown area.
City officials are also aware of public concern regarding the potential for more bars. Councilman Scott Evorik noted significant social media backlash, stating, “Instead of a McDonald’s or Wendy’s, we want more fine dining across the path.” The ordinance gives Crown Point control over future business applications, enhancing local economic development opportunities.
The riverfront district is defined by 101st Avenue to the north, Mississippi Street to the east, 113th Avenue to the south, and Madison Street to the west. Though Crown Point lacks a traditional river, the district includes the Beaver Dam Ditch, qualifying it under Indiana law.
Crown Point will issue 15 riverfront liquor licenses, each priced at $25,000. These licenses will not be transferable and will focus on establishments that create a vibrant dining and entertainment atmosphere rather than merely selling alcohol. Interested applicants must submit comprehensive business plans, including workforce data and facility improvement details, for approval by the Crown Point Redevelopment Commission before recommendations are sent to the state’s Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission.
Councilman Robert Clemons expressed optimism about the ordinance, calling it “a gift” to the city. He believes it will significantly contribute to the growth of local businesses and enhance the community’s appeal.
Additionally, the council approved a special use resolution for Club Pilates to establish a location at 10835 Broadway, taking over from Stride Fitness. Owner James Lemons is expanding his brand into Crown Point, marking yet another step towards revitalizing the area’s business landscape.
This initiative underscores Crown Point’s commitment to removing barriers for small business owners and enhancing the overall dining experience in the city, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can enjoy a vibrant and diverse culinary scene.
As the city moves forward with its plans, all eyes will be on how these new licenses and businesses will shape Crown Point’s future.
