Eight Arrested in NYC’s $Millions Auto Theft Operation
BREAKING: Eight men have been charged in a sophisticated auto theft ring that has reportedly caused millions of dollars in losses across New York City. Authorities, including the NYPD and federal prosecutors, announced the urgent indictments on Friday, October 13, 2023.
The thieves allegedly operated under the cover of night, targeting specific models like Honda CRVs, Acuras, and Jeeps, with a particular focus on black and white Hondas equipped with dark interiors. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny emphasized the thieves’ expertise, stating, “They knew exactly what they were looking for—and how to steal it.”
According to investigators, the group stole hundreds of vehicles over a span of at least four years, with estimates suggesting that as many as 1,000 cars may have been targeted. Most of the thefts occurred in the neighborhoods of the Bronx and Queens, where the thieves struck swiftly, often completing a car theft in less than two minutes.
The operation involved an alarming level of sophistication. These criminals utilized traditional methods to gain entry by popping door locks but also employed advanced techniques to reprogram keys using computers. The stolen vehicles were then transported to New Jersey, where the gang allegedly altered VIN numbers and sold the cars to unsuspecting buyers through platforms like Facebook Marketplace.
United States Attorney Jay Clayton stated, “As alleged, the operation caused millions of dollars in losses.” The range of vehicles targeted reflects a troubling trend in auto theft, particularly among late-model Hondas, which have become a prime target for organized crime.
Authorities are urging car owners to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as the investigation continues. With these arrests, law enforcement hopes to dismantle the operation and prevent further thefts in the community.
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops and more details emerge regarding the scale and impact of this auto theft ring.
