El Reno Community Unites to Honor Fallen Sgt. Thomas Duran
UPDATE: The city of El Reno, Oklahoma, is in mourning following the tragic death of Sgt. Thomas Duran, an officer who was struck by a car on October 17, 2023. Community members and law enforcement from across the state have come together to honor his legacy and support his family in this difficult time.
In a heartfelt tribute, family and friends participated in an honor walk at OU Medical Center on Thursday night, recognizing Sgt. Duran’s decision to be an organ donor. Police Chief Ken Brown expressed the deep emotional toll this loss has taken on the department, stating, “We took that call knowing it’s one of yours, one of your own, and it’s difficult.”
The outpouring of support has been overwhelming. Dozens of flowers now adorn police vehicles outside the El Reno Police Station, symbolizing the community’s grief and solidarity. Just down the road, the Elks Lodge is hosting a fundraising event, with a $10 spaghetti dinner aimed at supporting the Duran family. “100% of everything that comes in tonight, including tips, is going right back to the family,” said Jared Holden of the Elks Lodge.
“It’s been a beautiful coming together as well to support this event,” Holden continued. “You don’t just have people from our community come in and support it; you have people from other communities.” This collective effort underscores the strength of the El Reno community during such a harrowing time.
Sgt. Duran’s legacy is further honored by his contributions to the community even in his final moments. As President of the Fraternal Order of Police Mark Nelson noted, “It’s admirable beyond words that even in the worst times, Sgt. Duran is still giving back to this community.”
This tragic incident has ignited a wave of compassion and support among residents, illustrating the profound impact that one dedicated officer can have on a community. The fundraising efforts at the Elks Lodge are just one way that El Reno is coming together to heal and support the Duran family.
As the community rallies around Sgt. Duran’s family, further details about memorial services and ongoing support efforts are expected to be announced soon. This developing story highlights the importance of unity and resilience in the face of tragedy.
