Erie County Approves $2.1 Billion Budget Amid Buffalo’s Cold Snap
UPDATE: The Erie County Legislature has just approved an amended $2.1 billion budget for 2026, a significant move that includes a property tax decrease. This decision comes amidst a sharp drop in temperatures forecasted for Buffalo, with the first single-digit chill expected this Friday morning.
The budget was passed by a vote of 7 to 4, as Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz highlighted plans to lower property taxes from $3.29 to $3.09 per thousand dollars of assessed value. This reduction is poised to provide financial relief to residents during an economically challenging season.
In a separate development, Buffalo’s mayor-elect, Sean Ryan, will be inaugurated at the historic Kleinhans Music Hall on January 1, 2024, at 12 PM. This marks a historic first for Buffalo, with District Judge Anthony Brindisi officiating the ceremony. Ryan’s inauguration is set to symbolize a new chapter in Buffalo’s leadership.
As temperatures plunge, residents are advised to prepare for winter travel conditions. The New York State Department of Transportation reports heightened activity across all transportation modes as travelers navigate the cold weather. The impending snow forecast is expected to impact travel plans, with light accumulations of 1-3 inches anticipated on Saturday and more substantial snowfall predicted for Sunday.
Meanwhile, AAA is warning vehicle owners about the impact of cold weather on car batteries. As temperatures drop, battery performance diminishes, leading to sluggish starts. “Cold weather can significantly affect battery capacity,” AAA reports, urging drivers to prepare their vehicles for the frigid conditions.
The Erie County Water Authority also emphasizes safety amid the cold. Homeowners are advised to take precautions to prevent pipe bursts, a common issue during winter months that can result in costly property damage.
