Ex-Gavin Newsom Chief of Staff Indicted for $225K Theft Scheme
BREAKING: Former California Governor Gavin Newsom’s chief of staff, Dana Williamson, has been federally indicted for allegedly stealing $225,000 from former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. The indictment details a sophisticated scheme involving multiple accomplices, including Becerra’s former chief of staff Sean McCluskie and lobbyist Greg Campbell.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Eastern District of California, authorities reported that Williamson, 53, conspired to withdraw funds from Becerra’s political campaign account under false pretenses. Payments of $10,000 per month were allegedly made starting in late 2022, totaling $225,000 by fall 2024, intended for McCluskie’s wife to monitor the account, but no services were performed.
Williamson is also charged with submitting false tax returns, claiming over $1 million in deductions for personal expenses, including private jet travel and luxury items, which are not legally deductible. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison and substantial fines for bank fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy.
In a statement, Becerra expressed his shock: “The news today of formal accusations of impropriety by a long-serving trusted advisor are a gut punch.” He confirmed his cooperation with the ongoing investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Newsom’s spokesperson, Izzy Gardon, clarified that Williamson is no longer employed by the governor, stating, “While we are still learning details of the allegations, the Governor expects all public servants to uphold the highest standards of integrity.”
This urgent update raises critical questions about accountability within California’s political landscape. As the case unfolds, observers from both sides of the aisle will be watching closely, especially as it highlights the importance of integrity in public service.
The implications of this indictment could resonate widely, prompting discussions about ethics in governance as the investigation continues. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
