Family Expands Home in New York, Embraces New Life Stages
UPDATE: A family in Hillsdale, New York, is reshaping their home and lives, reflecting the urgent need for adaptable living spaces as they welcome their first child. Dimitri Brand and Nelly Mecklenburg are not just building a house; they are crafting a dynamic environment that evolves with their family.
The couple, who have moved frequently between cities including New Haven, Philadelphia, and even Cambridge, England, sought permanence. After years of uprooting their lives, they purchased a 10-acre lot in 2019 for $32,000 to create a home that embodies stability and growth.
In 2021, they took their first major step by building a 475-square-foot basement for Brand’s office and a 450-square-foot living space above, utilizing local materials like hemlock for a sustainable touch. The family’s resourcefulness is evident; with a budget of just $325,000, they relied on DIY efforts and friends’ help to keep costs down.
By Spring 2023, when they married, the house was largely complete. However, with the arrival of their son, they faced a pressing need for more space. To accommodate their growing family, they recently added an 850-square-foot extension to their home. Initially, they are using just 200 square feet of this new area, designed to adapt as their family expands.
Mecklenburg emphasizes the importance of flexibility, stating, “It’s about being adaptable.” This mindset has allowed the couple to create a functional kitchen suitable for family gatherings, transitioning from a small kitchenette to a space where they can prepare holiday meals.
The couple’s journey showcases not only their commitment to building a home but also the emotional significance of creating a nurturing environment for their child. With plans to further develop their space as their family grows, Brand stated, “This house has the capacity to be there for the different phases of our lives.”
As they continue to navigate the challenges of construction and family life, Brand and Mecklenburg’s story resonates with many who seek balance and adaptability in today’s fast-paced world. They hope their home will serve as a lasting foundation for their family’s future.
Stay tuned for more updates on their evolving journey as they embrace the complexities of family life and home building.
