URGENT UPDATE: The FBI’s recent arrests of NBA player Terry Rozier and coach Chauncey Phillips for alleged match-fixing have sparked a nationwide conversation about the integrity of sports. Following these shocking events, UK-based research agency YouGov conducted a survey revealing that 65% of Americans believe professional athletes may intentionally alter their performance to benefit sports bettors.

The survey, which included 19,000 participants, asked critical questions about the perception of athletes’ behavior in relation to betting outcomes. A striking finding shows that 32% of respondents “sometimes” suspect athletes influence their playstyle for betting advantages, while 29% are uncertain about such practices. Alarmingly, only 6% of those surveyed firmly believe athletes would never engage in such manipulation.

This survey is particularly relevant as 28% of participants reported having previously placed sports bets, highlighting a significant gap in perceptions. Sports bettors are notably more inclined to think that athletes “sometimes” or “often” engage in altering their performance, leading to a lack of trust in professional sports.

In another key revelation, the survey examined opinions on the impact of legalized sports betting. Less than 10% of non-bettors view this legalization positively, while the figure rises to 24% among sports bettors, indicating a stark divide in perspectives.

Additionally, the survey probed public sentiment towards major sportsbooks. When asked if they would feel “PROUD” or “EMBARRASSED” to work for any of the top ten sportsbooks, responses were telling. Only one sportsbook, Betway, saw a minor reputation boost of 0.1% since last year, while FanDuel and DraftKings experienced a significant dip, losing an average of 1.1 percentage points in trust. Many respondents expressed embarrassment rather than pride in association with these major betting platforms.

As the fallout from the arrests continues, the implications for the NBA and the broader sports betting landscape are profound. What happens next could reshape public trust in professional athletics, making this a critical moment for stakeholders across the industry.
