Federal Agents Detain Workers, Use Tear Gas at Chicago Parade
UPDATE: Federal agents detained several individuals in Old Irving Park, Chicago, during “Operation Midway Blitz,” disrupting a neighborhood Halloween parade and raising community fears. Witnesses report that tear gas was deployed as agents chased down a local construction worker, igniting panic among families.
The incident unfolded on October 28, 2023, as authorities conducted immigration enforcement operations across the North Side. Luis Villegas, a 35-year-old undocumented immigrant and father, was arrested while working on a home project near Kildare and Waveland. His brother Julian, visibly distressed, pleaded with agents as they handcuffed Luis, saying, “It takes a toll on me because I’m the one that’s responsible for him.”
Residents rushed to support Villegas, with neighbors blowing whistles and voicing their opposition to the federal actions. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as tear gas began to obscure the street where children were set to participate in their Halloween parade. “Instead of celebrating, we’re being terrorized by ICE,” said neighbor Anna Ware.
Authorities confirmed that agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) were involved in the operation, which has drawn criticism from local leaders. “Lawyers are working to hold these agents accountable,” stated Beatriz Ponce de León, Chicago Deputy Mayor of Immigrant, Migrant, and Refugee Rights. The situation escalated when DHS reported that officers faced “agitators” who obstructed operations, justifying the use of crowd control measures, including tear gas.
The confrontation intensified as protesters gathered in nearby Little Village, demonstrating against the federal crackdown. A DHS spokesperson claimed that agents were forced to deploy tear gas after being threatened by individuals throwing objects at them. “To protect themselves, the Border Patrol deployed additional measures to safely clear the area,” the spokesperson stated.
As the community grapples with these developments, the situation remains tense. City leaders are closely monitoring the operations, and a federal judge has ordered Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino to appear in court on Tuesday.
Residents and local officials are calling for an immediate reassessment of the federal tactics being used in their neighborhoods. The impact on the community is profound, with families now facing heightened fears during what should have been a festive celebration.
As this story continues to evolve, updates will follow regarding the legal repercussions of these actions and the overall safety of residents in Chicago’s immigrant communities.
