Former Candidate Adem Bunkeddeko Announces 2026 Comptroller Run
BREAKING: Former U.S. congressional candidate Adem Bunkeddeko has just announced his candidacy for New York state comptroller in the upcoming 2026 election. This development adds a new contender to the already competitive field challenging longstanding incumbent Tom DiNapoli, who has held the position since 2007.
In a statement released earlier today, Bunkeddeko emphasized the need for change, stating, “For too long, the Comptroller’s office has been on the sidelines – and New Yorkers have paid the price.” His announcement comes amid growing frustration over state governance and financial management.
Bunkeddeko, a resident of Brooklyn, made his intentions public through a compelling YouTube video detailing his campaign priorities. Key initiatives include comprehensive audits of the Metropolitan Transportation Agency, expanding access to state housing vouchers, and leveraging investments in clean energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure to boost the economy in upstate New York.
Previously, Bunkeddeko ran for Congress, facing off against Representative Yvette Clarke in New York’s 9th Congressional District during the 2018 and 2020 elections. He narrowly lost the first contest and finished significantly behind in a five-way race two years later.
He now joins fellow Democrats Drew Warshaw, a former assistant secretary to Governor Eliot Spitzer, and Raj Goyle, an entrepreneur and attorney, in the race against DiNapoli. On the Republican side, biotech entrepreneur and Cuban American immigrant Joseph Hernandez is vying for the nomination, indicating a robust electoral battle ahead.
This announcement comes at a critical time as New Yorkers express rising concerns about state fiscal management and accountability. Bunkeddeko’s entry further intensifies the scrutiny on DiNapoli, the longest-serving non-congressional statewide officeholder in New York.
What happens next? As the 2026 election approaches, all eyes will be on the candidates as they outline their visions for the future of New York’s financial oversight. Expect more updates as this race develops.
