Gonzaga’s Tyon Grant-Foster Granted Injunction to Play This Season
BREAKING: Gonzaga forward Tyon Grant-Foster has just been granted a preliminary injunction by a Spokane County judge, allowing him to take the court for the Bulldogs this season. This urgent development comes after the NCAA denied Grant-Foster’s eligibility waiver appeal earlier this month.
The ruling is pivotal for Gonzaga as it opens the door for Grant-Foster to join the team just in time for their exhibition game against Western Oregon, which kicked off less than an hour after Judge Marla Polin’s decision. Gonzaga, ranked No. 21, is set to begin their regular season on November 3, 2023, against Texas Southern.
Grant-Foster’s journey has been anything but straightforward. Originally part of the high school class of 2018, he played two seasons at Indian Hills Community College before transferring to Kansas, where he participated in 22 games for the Jayhawks in the 2020-21 season. His path took a serious turn when he collapsed in the locker room during his first game with DePaul in 2021, leading to multiple heart surgeries and a recovery period of 16 months.
Emerging from this challenging chapter, Grant-Foster returned to the court with Grand Canyon, where he excelled, winning WAC Player of the Year honors after averaging 20.1 points and 6.1 rebounds in the 2023-24 season. He not only led the Lopes to the NCAA tournament but also secured the program’s first NCAA tournament victory against Saint Mary’s.
The NCAA’s ruling on Grant-Foster’s eligibility hinged on the fact that they considered his time at both Indian Hills and Grand Canyon as his four years of eligibility. However, Grant-Foster’s legal team argued that he is entitled to an additional year due to a blanket waiver issued to former junior college transfers last December.
This latest development is a significant boost for Gonzaga’s roster. Grant-Foster is a candidate to start alongside preseason All-WCC first-team selections Graham Ike and Braden Huff. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how his presence will impact the Bulldogs’ performance this season.
Stay tuned for more updates as Gonzaga prepares for their upcoming season opener. This situation is still developing, and the implications of Judge Polin’s ruling could resonate throughout collegiate basketball.
