King William High School Track Reopens to Public After Closure
UPDATE: King William High School has officially reopened its track and stadium to the public as of October 21, 2023, following significant community outcry. The facility had been locked since August due to concerns over funding for maintenance, but local residents voiced strong opposition, arguing that taxpayer money funded the facilities and that access should be preserved.
The $1.75 million conversion of the high school football field to artificial turf last year, along with a $425,000 reconstruction of the track in 2023, had raised expectations for community access. School board members recognized the importance of public use during their recent meeting, where Superintendent Charles Wagner addressed the criticisms directly.
“We’ll make sure we find a way to give that to the community,” Wagner stated, emphasizing the need for responsible access. However, he warned that the stadium could be closed again if vandalism or damage occurs.
In reopening the track, the school system has laid out specific guidelines for users, which include keeping surfaces clean, wearing appropriate footwear, and prohibiting animals, bicycles, and skateboards within the fenced area. Local officials are hopeful that these measures will maintain the facility’s condition while allowing residents to enjoy it.
Board Chair Veda Frazier expressed confidence in the staff’s ability to manage public access effectively. “I trust staff to make good decisions on opening the track when they see fit,” she remarked. Meanwhile, Vice Chair Lindsey Catlett reiterated the financial limitations the division faces regarding repairs, stating, “No animals should be allowed, period. I’m happy to see people walking and kids playing.”
Community members have passionately defended the track’s value. Andrea Perseghin, a local mother, shared her concerns at the board meeting, highlighting the track’s role as a crucial exercise space in a rural community where roads can be unsafe. She noted, “The track has been a lifeline not just for me but for others who use it…what makes the track so valuable is that it’s accessible to everyone regardless of age, background or income.”
The reopening of King William High School’s track represents a significant victory for community members advocating for accessible public spaces. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this newly reopened facility, which serves as a vital resource for exercise and recreation.
Officials will closely monitor the situation to ensure the track remains in good condition, and community members are urged to adhere to the guidelines to ensure continued public access. As awareness of this development spreads, many are likely to share their experiences and advocate for the preservation of such essential community assets.
