Miami Heat’s Terry Rozier Arrested in FBI Betting Investigation
UPDATE: Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was arrested early Thursday morning as part of a significant FBI investigation into sports betting irregularities, sources confirm. The Eastern District of New York will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. ET today to provide further details on the arrests linked to this high-profile probe.
Rozier’s arrest took place at a hotel in Orlando, Florida, where the Heat faced the Orlando Magic the previous night. Rozier did not participate in the game due to a coach’s decision, raising questions about his involvement in the ongoing investigation.
Authorities are examining a concerning shift in betting patterns surrounding Rozier’s performance, particularly during a game against the Charlotte Hornets on March 23, 2023. Reports indicate that sportsbooks flagged a suspicious influx of bets on Rozier’s underperformance in points, rebounds, and assists, leading to a temporary suspension of wagering on him. In that game, Rozier played only 10 minutes before exiting due to a foot injury.
The investigation also ties back to former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter, who was banned from the NBA in spring 2024 for his role in a broader gambling scheme involving player prop bets. Porter has pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges and admitted to manipulating his performance in two games during the 2023-24 season. He is currently awaiting sentencing in December, with four other men, including Porter, having already pleaded guilty in the case.
In a related statement, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the league’s proactive measures against betting manipulation during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.” Silver emphasized the partnership with sportsbooks to limit prop bets on players like Rozier, stating, “We’ve asked some of our partners to pull back some of the prop bets, especially when they’re on two-way players, where it’s too easy to manipulate something.”
This developing situation has sent shockwaves through the NBA community, raising questions about the integrity of the sport and the impact of gambling on player performance. As the news unfolds, fans and players alike are left wondering how this arrest will affect the Miami Heat’s season and Rozier’s future in the league.
Stay tuned for updates from the press conference and more details as they become available. The implications of this case could resonate far beyond Rozier, affecting the broader landscape of professional sports betting.
