New $25 Million Ogdensburg Airport Renovation Aims to Attract Canadians
UPDATE: The newly remodeled Ogdensburg International Airport in St. Lawrence County officially opened on Tuesday, heralding a significant $25 million upgrade aimed at re-attracting Canadian travelers. This renovation is part of a broader initiative to enhance rural airports across New York State and improve the travel experience for visitors.
Officials, including airport manager Charlie Garrelts, emphasized the comprehensive updates that include a new entrance, ticketing counters, security screening areas, a waiting room, baggage claim, and community spaces. “It’s everything from check-in, all the way to getting on the plane,” Garrelts stated, highlighting the focus on traveler comfort and convenience.
Of the total investment, $18 million was provided by New York State, part of the $230 million Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition. This initiative aims to showcase that smaller airports can offer significant benefits to communities and travelers alike.
“We want to bring attention to these communities so that when people are flying in, it’s a great experience,” said Janet Ho, Assistant Commissioner of Finance & Integrated Modal Services at the New York State Transportation Department.
With this renovation, Ogdensburg hopes to serve as a gateway for Canadian visitors, who contribute vital economic support by spending local dollars. “Canadians are always our partners and friends. Getting them in here, using our facility, and traveling in the U.S. is beneficial for our community,” Garrelts added.
However, airport officials report a recent decline in Canadian bookings, citing challenges brought on by tariffs and other factors. “We’ve seen hesitation this year, with fewer Canadians booking flights and revenue down,” Garrelts noted. The hope is that the revamped airport will symbolize friendship and provide the comfort needed for Canadians to feel welcome crossing the border.
Currently, travelers can use Breeze Airways services to fly from Ogdensburg to Washington, D.C., or Raleigh-Durham, N.C. Additionally, starting in February, the airline will offer flights to Orlando during the spring break period, further expanding travel options from this newly upgraded facility.
“We really appreciate Canadians and their business. Nothing has changed in how we feel about the Canadians that come over here,” stated Steve Lawrence, Executive Director of the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority.
As the airport embarks on this new chapter, officials remain optimistic that these enhancements will attract more travelers and stimulate local economic growth. The community is ready to showcase its new asset, aimed at providing an exceptional travel experience for all passengers.
Stay tuned for further updates as Ogdensburg International Airport begins to welcome new travelers into its revitalized space.
