New York Health Commissioner Urges Flu Vaccination Amid Risks
UPDATE: New York State’s health commissioner, Jim McDonald, M.D., M.P.H., has just announced critical advice for residents as flu season approaches. The 2023-2024 flu season is projected to be moderate, according to the CDC, but experts warn that unpredictability remains high.
During an urgent briefing earlier today in Albany, N.Y., McDonald stressed the importance of getting vaccinated against the flu and RSV. “This is critical because RSV is one of the leading causes of infants being admitted to the hospital,” he stated, highlighting the need for heightened awareness as flu and respiratory illnesses surge this fall.
McDonald encouraged the public to stay proactive. “The best way to protect yourself is to get the flu vaccine and to wash your hands,” he noted. As RSV cases typically rise in October, along with flu infections, the health commissioner emphasized the importance of being vigilant. “If your child is sick, postpone playdates to prevent spreading illness,” he advised.
With the overlapping symptoms of COVID-19, flu, and RSV—cough, fever, and runny nose—he cautioned that recognizing who is most vulnerable, particularly the very young and the elderly, is essential. “Trust your body and get tested if you feel unwell,” McDonald urged, reminding everyone to listen to their bodies.
Additionally, McDonald warned about misinformation spreading online. “Too many of us are listening to perfect strangers who really aren’t qualified,” he cautioned. “Your doctor knows best.” This statement underscores the growing concern over health decisions influenced by unverified sources.
For those seeking to bolster their health this season, McDonald offers simple yet effective recommendations: stay hydrated, eat fruits and vegetables, and use medications like Tylenol for fever management. “When there is trouble, call your doctor or get to the hospital,” he concluded, emphasizing the importance of proper medical guidance.
As we head deeper into flu season, the public is urged to take these health advisories seriously. With the potential for illness on the rise, now is the time to act. Share this vital information with friends and family to help protect your community.
