NWSL Playoffs Heat Up: Gotham FC Shocks Kansas City Current
BREAKING: In a stunning upset, Gotham FC has eliminated the Kansas City Current from the NWSL playoffs, shaking up the postseason landscape as the semifinals approach. This unexpected turn of events ignites the race for the coveted NWSL Championship, set to take place on November 22 at San Jose’s PayPal Park.
The Current, who dominated the regular season with a staggering 21-point lead, are now out of contention, leaving the door wide open for the remaining four teams: the Washington Spirit, Orlando Pride, Portland Thorns, and Gotham FC. With the playoffs heating up, every match is crucial and each team is poised to seize the opportunity.
The semifinals are scheduled as follows:
- November 15: Washington Spirit vs. Portland Thorns at 12 p.m. ET (CBS, Paramount+)
- November 16: Orlando Pride vs. Gotham FC at 3 p.m. ET (ABC, ESPN+)
As the highest seed remaining, the Washington Spirit are seen as favorites, but they must navigate challenges, especially concerning the status of star player Trinity Rodman. Rodman, recovering from an MCL sprain, is crucial for the Spirit’s success. Without her, the team has struggled, posting only four wins in twelve matches. Her potential return could be a game-changer.
Meanwhile, Gotham FC’s recent performance demonstrates their resilience. The team, led by MVP candidate Esther Gonzalez, has found ways to overcome obstacles, including a critical 2-1 victory over the Current. Gonzalez has been a powerhouse, contributing to approximately 40% of Gotham’s goals. With the addition of Jaedyn Shaw, who scored in the quarterfinals, Gotham is looking dangerous as they head into the semifinals.
The Portland Thorns, finishing third in the regular season, are riding high thanks to their rising star, Olivia Moultrie, who has netted eight goals in her last eleven games. This attacking edge could prove pivotal against the Spirit. However, the Thorns have relied heavily on midfielder Sam Coffey, and their defensive vulnerabilities could be exposed in the high-stakes matches ahead.
The Orlando Pride, the defending champions, face their own challenges with the absence of key player Barbra Banda, who suffered a season-ending injury. Despite this setback, the Pride’s experience from last season gives them an edge, as they look to adapt and capitalize on their remaining talent, including reigning defender of the year Emily Sams.
With the NWSL Championship on the line, anticipation is building as fans eagerly await the outcomes of the semifinals. Each of these four teams has a legitimate shot at the title, making this postseason one of the most unpredictable in NWSL history.
