Oklahoma City Fire’s Urgent Initiative to Reunite Lost Pets
UPDATE: Oklahoma City Fire Department has just launched an urgent initiative to reunite lost pets with their owners, utilizing cutting-edge microchip scanners at two local fire stations. This program aims to expedite the process of identifying pet owners, ensuring furry friends return home quickly.
According to officials, pets often escape due to various reasons, including slipping from leashes or jumping fences. “It’s just something that happens,” said Scott Douglas from the Oklahoma City Fire Department. “I’m hoping to get the pets back to their owners a lot faster.”
The initiative allows community members who find lost pets to bring them to either Fire Station 30 at 4343 S. Lake Hefner Dr or Fire Station 25 at 2701 SW 59th St. Once there, firefighters scan the animal’s microchip. If detected, the scanner will provide a unique chip number, which firefighters can use to locate the pet’s owner through an online database.
Douglas emphasized the significance of this program, stating, “It’s just neighbors looking out for neighbors.” This compassionate approach has already yielded success. Recently, a concerned citizen brought a lost dog named Sue Magoo to Fire Station 30. Firefighters scanned the chip and were able to reunite the dog with her owner in mere minutes.
Beyond reuniting pets, the Oklahoma City Fire Department aims to alleviate pressure on the local animal welfare system. “The initiative is designed to help reduce overcrowding in animal welfare facilities,” Douglas explained.
Currently, only Fire Stations 30 and 25 are equipped with these microchip scanners, making it crucial for community members to know where to go if they find a lost pet. It’s important to note that if a pet’s owner cannot be identified through the scanning process, the fire station will not take custody of the animal.
This new initiative highlights the ongoing commitment of the Oklahoma City Fire Department to serve and support the community, reinforcing the bond between residents and their beloved pets. As the program develops, local authorities encourage everyone to spread the word and participate in this heartwarming effort to reunite lost pets with their families.
Stay tuned for further updates on this initiative and share the news to help ensure that lost pets find their way home swiftly!
