Oscar Isaac Calls Out Disney Over Working with Them on ‘Star Wars’
UPDATE: Oscar Isaac has just declared he is “not so open” to returning to Disney for any future Star Wars projects. This statement comes in light of recent controversies surrounding Disney and ABC’s handling of Jimmy Kimmel, who was suspended after making remarks about the assassination of far-right activist Charlie Kirk.
In an interview published today in GQ Magazine, Isaac expressed strong dissatisfaction with Disney’s current direction. He stated, “Right now I’m not so open to working with Disney. But if they can kinda figure it out and, you know, not succumb to fascism, that would be great.” This comment follows the suspension of Kimmel’s show for five days, which occurred after his comments on Kirk’s death triggered widespread outrage.
The September 2023 suspension led to significant backlash, prompting Kimmel to make an emotional return to his show on September 23, where he clarified, “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man.”
Isaac’s remarks reflect growing tensions between artists and the corporate decisions of studios like Disney, which has faced scrutiny over its political stances and content management. He alluded to a past comment where he indicated he wouldn’t return to Star Wars unless he “needed another house,” a remark he later referred to as “slightly dickish.”
The Star Wars franchise, in which Isaac played Poe Dameron across three films, generated over $4.4 billion at the global box office, making his potential return significant for Disney. However, Isaac’s hesitance signals a deeper issue within the franchise’s relationship with its stars.
As Disney navigates these complicated dynamics, fans are now left questioning the future of their beloved characters. Isaac hinted that he would be open to a conversation about returning to a “galaxy far away” if the studio charts a more constructive path.
For now, all eyes are on Disney as they respond to these developments. Isaac’s upcoming projects include leading the second season of Beef on streaming platforms, and he is also starring in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which is currently streaming on Netflix.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story and what it could mean for the future of Star Wars.
